Zhan (zh ā n) surname
It belongs to the Chengji family, with its ancestor being Marquis Zhan. The ancestors of the Zhan family, who migrated to Hongdong, Hongdong, and Zhaocheng counties during the Ming Dynasty, were people from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, and Zhaocheng County. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, they were ordered to concentrate on relocating to other places in Hongdong, and by the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shanxi, and other places.
The earliest record of the surname Zhan can be found in the Tang Dynasty's "Yuanhe Surname Compilation".
There are four main sources of surnames:
① Derived from taking official positions as surnames. Zhan character, an ancient common occupation character. The official position in charge of Zhan Wu is Zhan Yin, followed by the surname Zhan.
② Originating from using fiefdoms as surnames. According to the "History of Lu", the descendants of the Yellow Emperor who were enfeoffed by Yu were located in the territory of Zhan, and the former site of Zhanxu was in present-day Le'an, Jiangxi. The descendants became surnamed Zhan.
③ Originating from the Ji surname. According to the "Family Name Garden", in the late Western Zhou Dynasty, King You of Zhou was a lecherous and tyrannical ruler who indulged in debauchery and refused to listen to the advice of his ministers. At that time, the illegitimate brother of King You, Marquis Zhan, was serving as a junior teacher in the court. Seeing this, he sighed deeply and said, "Valuing women so much is the root of trouble. If you don't leave now, you will be implicated." So he resigned from his position in the court on the grounds of illness and returned to his fiefdom of Zhanyi. Later, in order to please Bao Si, King You deposed the queen, expelled the crown prince, and played with the feudal lords, ultimately leading to the downfall of the country. He was killed by the soldiers of the Western Rong army, and most of the courtiers became his sacrificial victims for debauchery. Only Marquis Zhan, who has already left, can be kept safe. His descendants took his title Zhan as their surname.
④ Originating from using the name of the town as a surname. According to the "Biography of the Ninth Year of Zhao" in the Book of Jin, when Zhan Huanbo resigned from the Jin dynasty, there was Zhan Jia in Jin and Zhan Bo in Zheng, who took the city as their surname.
The county with the surname Zhan is Hejian County. Hejian Commandery: Originally a territory of Zhao during the Warring States period. In the early years of Emperor Gaozu of Han (206 BC), a county was established. Named after its location between the Yellow River and Yongding. Equivalent to the area around Hejian County in central Hebei Province today.
The main hall names of the Zhan surname are Zhonglian Hall and Gaodeng Hall. Zhonglian Hall: During the Ming Dynasty, Zhan Jun, as a fellow magistrate of Cizhou, wrote the four characters "loyalty, diligence, integrity, and frugality" as his motto to encourage himself.

In the late Song Dynasty, there was a Shu general named Zhan Jun who sacrificed his life for resisting the Yuan Dynasty; During the Ming Dynasty, there was Zhan Xiyuan, a calligrapher from Wuyuan; During the Qing Dynasty, there was Zhan Tianchong, a painter from Wuyuan.
According to the second national census, there are 4255 people surnamed Zhan in Shanxi Province, 134 in Linfen City, and 5 in Hongdong County.
The ancestral shrine of the Zhan surname is enshrined in the fifth altar of the Ancestral Hall in the Hongdong Dahuai Tree Scenic Area.
