Zhu (zh ù) surname

Inheriting from the Yellow Emperor, the ancestors were Zhu Hou and Zhu Yong, and it is the 141st surname in contemporary China. The ancestors of the Zhu family, who migrated from the Hongdong locust tree in the Ming Dynasty, were people from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and other places. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, they were ordered to move to other places in the Hongdong locust tree. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shanxi and other places.

The earliest record of the surname Zhu can be found in the Zhou Dynasty's "Shiben".

There are four main sources of surnames:

① Derived from taking official positions as surnames. According to the "Yuanhe Xingzhuan", in ancient times, due to the backwardness of science, people revered superstition. Many military events require divination to determine actions in advance, so the status of ancient wizards was very high. Among wizards, there are three types: divination, recording, and speech, which are respectively called shamans, historians, and diviners. The official in charge of delivering speeches is called Zhu, who must have clever speech and profound knowledge, so the person holding the position of Zhu is often hereditary. Over time, people took the name of their official position Zhu as their surname. In the Spring and Autumn Period, the state of Wei had Zhu Tuo, who obtained his surname because he served as an official of the Grand Preceptor.

② Originating from one's own surname. According to the "Genealogy Table of Prime Ministers" in the "New Book of Tang", during the reign of King Wu of the Western Zhou Dynasty, descendants of the Yellow Emperor with the surname "Zhu Hou" were conferred the title of "Marquis of Zhu" in the state of Zhu. The former location of Zhu was in present-day Linyi County, Shandong Province, and its descendants took the name "Zhu" as their surname.

③ Originating from after Zhu Yong. Huangdi had Situ Zhuyong, whose descendants have the surname Zhu.

④ Derived from using a place name as a surname. According to the "Genealogy Table of Prime Ministers" in the New Book of Tang, during the Western Zhou Dynasty, Zhudi was located in the northeast of Changqing County, Shandong Province, and the residents had the surname Zhu.

The counties with the surname Zhu mainly include Taiyuan County. Taiyuan Commandery: First established in the fourth year of King Zhuangxiang of Qin (246 BC). It is equivalent to the area south of Mount Wutai and north of Huoshan Mountain in Shanxi Province today. The capital was located in Jinyang (now southwest of Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province).

The main hall name of the Zhu surname is Leyitang. Leyitang: During the Song Dynasty, Zhu Kejiu made great contributions in southern China and was appointed as the Governor of Guizhou. After his father's death, he went home to mourn and has been living in seclusion ever since. He was happy to do good deeds and grew up with his younger brother. He established a school in the village to cultivate talents, and was praised by scholars.

The main couplets of the Zhu surname include: Confucianism spreading eastward (Zhu Zhongrong); Weide Nanfu (Zhu Liang). Hande Nanfu (Zhu Liang); Confucian Style Dongpo (Wishing Elephant Vessel).

[Celebrities] 53 cases of Zhu's family were included in the Dictionary of Chinese Names, and 66 cases were included in the Dictionary of Chinese Names in Past Dynasties.

Zhu Yingtai, a famous historical figure with the surname Zhu, was a famous woman of the Jin Dynasty; Yuan Dynasty calligrapher Zhu Gu; During the Zhou Dynasty, there were doctors who wished to kneel down; During the Han Dynasty, there was Zhu Gui, a native of Southern Zheng; In the Ming Dynasty, there were Zhu Yunming, a calligrapher, and Zhu Shitai, a poet; Qing Dynasty painter Zhu Chang.

According to the seventh national census, there are 8037 people surnamed Zhu in Shanxi Province, 496 in Linfen City, and 29 in Hongdong County.

The ancestral shrine of the Zhu surname is enshrined in the fourth altar of the Ancestral Hall in the Hongdong Dahuai Tree Scenic Area.
