The earliest record of the Xia surname can be found in the Eastern Han Dynasty's "Qianfu Lun".
There are three main sources of surnames:
① Derived from the surname Si. According to the "Annals of Xia" in the Records of the Grand Historian, it is said that during the reign of King Yao, Lady Zhi, the wife of Gun, gave birth to Yu after eating Job's tears in her dream. King Yao then gave Yu Si the surname. At that time, the Central Plains were flooded and the people were struggling to make ends meet. Emperor Yao adopted the suggestion of the Four Sacred Mountains and appointed shad to control the water. shad controlled the water for nine years and used blocking methods, but the flood was not eliminated. After ascending to the throne, Shun removed the position of Gun and replaced him with Dayu to control the floods. He also sent Qi (ancestor of the Shang tribe), Houji (ancestor of the Zhou tribe), Gaotao (ancestor of the Qin and Zhao tribes) and others to assist him. Yu summarized the experience and lessons learned from the failure of the catfish, and successfully controlled the flood by dredging the river channel. After the flood was eliminated, Yu guided the people to build ditches, develop agriculture, and lead troops to quell the Three Seedlings Rebellion, allowing the people to live and work in peace and contentment. Da Yu was awarded the title of Emperor in Xia by King Shun for his meritorious service in controlling floods. The Xia territory was located in Yangcheng, which is now part of Dengfeng County in Henan Province. Later, he passed on the throne to him. After the death of Dayu, his son Qi established the Xia Dynasty. The Xia Dynasty initially established its capital in Yangcheng, and later moved its capital to Zhenling (now Gongyi City, Henan Province) and Anyi (now Xia County, Shanxi Province). In the late summer, during the reign of Emperor Jie, it moved its capital to Bo, which is now Yanshi, Henan Province. The Xia Dynasty lasted for over 400 years and was passed down to thirteen generations and sixteen kings. Later, it was reported that Emperor Jie of Xia was overthrown by Shang Tang due to his lack of morality. After the fall of Xia, the royal family took the state as their surname and called it Xia, which is the Xia surname in Henan.
② Originating from the surname Gui. According to the "Annals of Clans" and "Records of the Grand Historian", in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, after King Wu posthumously conferred the title of Prince Shun, Guiman established the state of Chen in Chen, known as Hu Gongman and Chen Hu Gong in history. During the Spring and Autumn Period, when the 16th king, Duke Chen Xuan, was grinding his mortar, his concubine gave birth to a son named Guixi, whose courtesy name was Zixia. In order to distinguish herself from other family branches, Guixi referred to her own branch as the Shaoxi clan. Guixi gave birth to Yushu, and Yushu gave birth to Zhengshu, also known as Nan. Zhengshu began to take the Xia character from his grandfather's surname. Also known as the Xia surname in Henan.
③ Derived from the surname Si. According to the "Genealogy of Prime Ministers" and "Genealogy of Surnames" in the Book of Tang, in the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, Donglou Gong, a descendant of Xia Yu, was granted the title of Marquis of Qi. During the reign of Duke Jian, he was destroyed by the state of Chu. Duke Jian's younger brother, Tuo, fled to the state of Lu. Duke Dao of Lu granted him land and named him Xiahou because he was a descendant of Xia Yu. His descendants took Xia as their surname. Later, he left the state of Lu and went to Qiao County in Peidi, where he became a native of Qiao County. It is the Xia surname from Anhui.
The Xia surname counties mainly include Kuaiji County, Qiao County, Gaoyang County, Lu County, etc. Kuaiji Commandery: Established in the early years of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC).
