The lineage is inherited from Weizi Qi and Zhongyan, with the ancestor being Kong Fujia. It is the 72nd surname among the top 100 contemporary surnames in China. The ancestors of the Kong family who migrated to Hongdong during the Ming Dynasty were from Pingyang and Taiyuan prefectures, Ze, Lu, Liao, Fen, and Qin provinces, as well as Hongdong and Zhaocheng counties. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it was ordered to relocate the large locust trees in Hongdong to other places. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shanxi and other places.
The earliest record of the Kong surname can be found in the Eastern Han Dynasty's "Qianfu Lun".
There are three main sources of surnames:
① Derived from the surname of the child. According to the records in "Guangyun" and "Qianfu Lun", it is said that the founder of the Shang Dynasty, Qi, was born after the second consort of the emperor, Jian Di, swallowed the eggs of a mysterious bird. After Qi grew up, he was appointed as the Minister of Education by King Shun for his contributions in assisting Yu the Great in controlling the floods. He lived in the Shang Dynasty and some say in the barbarians, and was given the surname of his son. Legend has it that in the 14th generation, there was a soup called Lu, which was named after its ancestor who swallowed the eggs of a mysterious bird and gave birth to Qi. Its courtesy name is Taiyi. After Tang became the leader of the Shang ethnic group, he intermarried with the Shen family and appointed Yi Yin as the ruler. He established the capital in Bo and gathered his strength. After eleven battles, he finally conquered Xia and established the Shang Dynasty, moving the capital to Xibo. Due to Tang Wang being the founding monarch of the Shang Dynasty and highly respected by the Yin people, his descendants took Zijia Ji as their surname, hence the Kong surname, which is the Henan Kong surname; According to the "Records of the Grand Historian" and "Annals of Clans", during the reign of King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty, he was destroyed by King Wu of Zhou, and the Zhou Dynasty was established. King Zhou's son Wu Geng was enfeoffed in the old land of Chaoge, and Guan Shu, Cai Shu, and Huo Shu were ordered to monitor Wu Geng. After the death of King Wu, King Cheng was young and was appointed as regent by Zhou Gongdan. However, the three supervisors did not agree and colluded with Wu Geng to rebel. Zhou Gongdan quelled the rebellion and enfeoffed Wei Ziqi, the eldest son of Shang Wang Diyi, the illegitimate brother of King Zhou of Shang, in the state of Song to preside over the ancestral worship of the Shang clan. After the death of Wei Zijun, his younger brother Wei Zhongyan succeeded to the throne. Wei Zhongyan's great grandson, Song Xianggong, gave birth to Fu Fu He, Fu Fu He gave birth to Song Fu Zhou, and Song Fu Zhou gave birth to Shi Fu Sheng, Shi Fu Sheng gave birth to Zheng Kao Fu. Shi Kao Fu served as a minister in the Dai Gong, Wu Gong, and Xuan Gong dynasties, and he gave birth to Kong Fu Jia. Kong Fu Jia's name was Kong Fu, and Song Mu Gong was the Grand Marshal. Kong Fu Jia was killed due to the rebellion of Hua Du. His son, Mu Jin Fu, was still young and fled to the state of Lu with his family. When Mu Jin Fu grew up, he took his father's name as his surname. Known as the Kong family, they settled in the state of Lu from then on. The grandson of Mu Jinfu was known as Fang Shu, and Fang Shu was passed down to the fifth generation grandson Lianghe, who was a famous strongman at that time. Ren Lianghe, the Grand Master of Xiyi in the State of Lu, married the daughter of Yan, Zheng Zai, in his later years and gave birth to Confucius. He later became a renowned philosopher and politician in Chinese history. Afterwards, the Kong family developed into a prominent family. It is the surname Kong from Shandong. It is historically known as the authentic Kong surname.
② Originating from the Ji and Si surnames. According to the book "Differentiation of Surnames in Ancient and Modern Times", the state of Wei also had the surname Kong, who was a descendant of Kang Shu, the younger brother of King Wu of Zhou; Chen Guoguo has the surname Kong and is a descendant of Gu Dafu Kong Ning.
