There are five main sources of surnames:

① Originating from the Ji surname. According to the "General Principles of Customs", in the late Yin and Shang dynasties, the Zhou ethnic group living in the Wei River Basin gradually became stronger. Shang King Wending felt that Zhou's strength was a threat to himself, so he found an excuse to kill the leader of the Zhou people, Ji Li. After Ji Chang, the son of Ji Li, succeeded to the throne, he worked hard to become stronger, and the surrounding small countries surrendered one after another. Due to his strong influence, he was conferred the title of Xibo by King Zhou of Shang and became one of the Three Dukes. Later, due to the increasing reputation of Jichang, King Zhou of Shang found an excuse to imprison him in Youli, and later released him. After returning to Zhou, Xibo Jichang, with the assistance of the wise minister Jiang Ziya, successively resolved the disputes between Yu and Rui, surrendered the two countries, and successively attacked and destroyed the states of Li, Bin, Chong, etc., and established Fengyi as the capital. It has formed a situation where there are two out of three in the world, and its actual power has surpassed that of the Shang Dynasty. Xibo reigned for fifty years. After his death, his son Wu Wang succeeded to the throne and completed the great cause of overthrowing the Shang Dynasty. In the eleventh century BC, he established the Zhou Dynasty with its capital in Hao. King Wu of Zhou posthumously honored his father Xibo Jichang as King Wen of Zhou. Among the descendants of King Wen Chang of Zhou, those who used the surname Wen from their ancestors' posthumous titles are known as Shaanxi Wen.

② Originating from the change of the surname Jing. According to the "Biography of Wen Yanbo" in the "History of the Song Dynasty", the surname "Jing" in the Song Dynasty was changed to "Gou and Wen" due to its homophone with the name "Jing" in the reign title "Jingguo" of Emperor Huizong of Song. In order to avoid taboo, the character "Jing" was changed to "Gou and Wen", and the written name was taken as the surname.

③ Originating from the Zhou Dynasty after Wenzi. According to "A Brief Study of Surnames", the Wei Kingdom established in the early Western Zhou Dynasty was the Ji surname Hou Kingdom,

Later, he became a minister in the state of Wei and was posthumously honored as Wenzi after his death. His descendants took Wen as their surname, which is Shanxi Wen.

⑤ Derived from the surname Jiang. During the reign of King Wu of Zhou, Wen Shu, a descendant of Emperor Yan, was granted the title of Duke of Jiang in the state of Xu. In the early years of the Warring States period, it was destroyed by the state of Chu, and some say it was destroyed by Wei. After the fall of the state of Xu, his descendants scattered in all directions, and later he took the surname Wen, the founder of the state of Xu, as his surname. This is known as the Henan Wen surname.
