The lineage belongs to Emperor Yao, whose ancestor was Fang Ling, and it is the 199th contemporary surname in China. The ancestors of the Fang family, who immigrated from the Hongdong Dahuai tree in the Ming Dynasty, were people from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and other regions. In the early Ming Dynasty, they were ordered to migrate from the Hongdong Dahuai tree to other places. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, their descendants were distributed in Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi, Gansu, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shanxi, and other places.
The earliest record of the surname Fang can be found in the Guangyun of the Northern Song Dynasty.
There are two main sources of surnames:
① Originating from the Qi surname. According to the "Yuanhe Surname Compilation", "Guangyun", and "Tongzhi · Clan Brief", it is said that the ancient emperor Yao passed on the throne to Shun. After Shun succeeded to the throne, he felt the kindness of Yao and conferred the title of Dan Zhu, the son of Yao, in Danyuan, with the country name Geng. He also bestowed the title of Marquis of Fangyi on Dan Zhu's son Ling, who is now located in Suiping County, Henan Province. The descendants of the Marquis of Fangyi took the place name of Feng as their surname.
② Originating from the Xianbei tribe's compound surname. According to the "Official Family Annals" in the Book of Wei, during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, there was a Fang Yin surname in Northern Wei. After Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital to Luoyang and entered the Central Plains, it was changed to the Fang surname.
The county names with the surname Fang mainly include Qinghe County and Jinan County. Qinghe Commandery: A commandery established by Emperor Gaozu of Han (202 BC). The capital is located in Qingyang (now southeast of Qinghe County, Hebei Province). The jurisdiction is equivalent to the southern part of Hebei Province and the area around Linqing County in Shandong Province.
The main hall names of the surname Fang include Zhongshu Hall. Zhongshu Hall: During the Tang Dynasty, Fang Xuanling became a jinshi at the age of 19.
